The 'Umlilo' (the Zulu/Xhosa name for fire) is a locally designed and manufactured backpack for ground crew on wildfires. Designed to support long days on the fireline. The 'Umlilo' backpack has a carrying capacity of 20L and 'roll up' straps for Helitac Crew or those who just want to keep things tidy. Built from durable, weather-protected Cordura, it still features a dedicated hydration bladder compartment and Molle attachment points for essential tools.
Key Features
- Engineered to distribute pack weight from shoulders to hips, reducing fatigue on long deployments.
- Made from durable 600 Denier Cordura with a PVC coating to protect contents from weather and rough conditions.
- Foam padding in weight-bearing areas enhances comfort during extended wear.
- Lightweight metal stays provide structural support without adding excess weight.
- Multiple compartments for organised storage:
- Hydration bladder pocket (capable of carrying up to a 3-Litre bladder with feeding tube access)
- Water bottle holders on both sides
- Main compartment for equipment / extra clothing
- Two smaller compartments for first aid kits, food, etc.
- Molle straps positioned strategically for attaching radios, carabiners, hydration tubes, whistles and other accessories.
- The area of the pack that makes contact with your back is lined with moisture-wicking material that draws sweat away from the skin to the outer surface, where it evaporates. This helps keep the area under the backpack dry and cool during physical activity.
